SUNDAY. Jon Lloyd - A very grey and overcast cast day. The light was very poor for photography so not much in the way of photographs on the Sunday Dairy and no chance to try out my adapter for the telescope!! Despite the very cool NE wind a few brave souls ventured out during the morning. The fields around the wetland were very busy with the biggest flock of Woodpigeon ever recorded. They obviously hadn't heard of the Peregrine visit yesterday!! This field is partly ploughed now so the Skylark flocks are reducing in size. It was this field that proved to be a great attraction again. The female
Hen Harrier came in from the rough land to the left of the hide
as it has done many times before and spent some time dashing around
amongst the Woodpigeons. Several thousand rose into the sky together
with 200 or 300 Starlings and some Skylarks. The Hen
Harrier was unlucky and eventually landed in this field and rested
for a while before dashing off from the direction it had come. The bird
seemed to be very active this morning. A cormorant and single Mute Swan flew overhead. The hedges around the pools and its surrounding fields were full of Fieldfares and Redwings. A large flock of Linnets fed in the fields to the left and behind the wetland. They seem to have been around now for several weeks. A small flock of Goldfinches passed by. The Little Owl was absent from its hole in the tree. Several good views of a female Sparrowhawk during the morning including an amusing confrontation with a Magpie that must have upset it. The Sparrowhawk harried the Magpie in a Hawthorn bush causing the bird to move deeper into the bush. Evenutally the Sparrowhawk went to ground a few yards away and the undeterred Magpie then hopped dwon to the ground not far from it. The furious Sparrowhawk the repeated the performance chasing the Magpie into a tree further along the hedge. Quiet on the duck front this morning!. Reduced Teal numbers and a few Mallard. No Coot yet! This time last year we seemed to have growing Coot numbers. Now, apart from a single record from Martin Grant a month back, no birds have been recorded. I wonder if this is related to changes in the habitat or a trend this year with Coot numbers generally.... The walk back to the Farm turned up a Grey Wagtail that had been feeding at the edge of the garden pond. MONDAY. Kevin Payne and Pete Jordan - Hen Harrier female10.35 - 10.45am.
