TUESDAY

Jon Lloyd - New Years Eve - Visibility not bad but I have seen better. Very cold today with a biting chill and dull grey sky.

Good flock of 500 plus Starling out on the farm and number of small flocks of finches; Goldfinch 30, Greenfinch 30, Chaffinch 6.Large flock of Lapwing again perhaps 200 with a smaller flock of 50 feeding on a winter Barley field nearby. I also heard Wigeon calling in the fields somewhere but couldn't locate them.Several Buzzards on the surrounding fields. Small flocks of Redwing in the hedges but no Fieldfare today.

The pools were busy with the usual large numbers of Teal but not as many as last week. A Water Rail called and several Moorhen scuttled around at the waters edge. The pools were rather full today afte the recetn rain.

A female Sparrowhawk was announced bythe chiding call of a Blue Tit feeding on the hide feeders, it dashed through unlucky this time.A female Peregrine balsted through a large flock of Wood Pigeon, singled out an individual and followed this close to the ground but eventually gave up. It circled the pool and then dashed low across the water causing panic amongst the Teal that splashed and dived to avoid.

It evenually came to rest on the telegraph pole in the wetland. A Kestrel harried it whilst it sat here but to no avail and remained here, sat for five minutes before taking off to the right of the hide and disappearing from view.

Also seen today: Mallard, Meadow Pipit, Tree sparrow, House Sparrow, Wren, Robin, Yellowhammer, Blcakbird, Jay, Magpie, Carrion Crow, Jackdaw, Little Owl, Rooks, Goldcrest, Heron

FRIDAY

Jon Lloyd - Very cold and grey day.

The Little Owl was in its usual spot. There were small flocks of finches in the hedgerows including Chaffinch, Goldfinch and Greenfinch.

----

The hide provided exception views of Willow Tit. A pair were feeding in the ditch in front of the hide. Most of the vegetation was neck high in water after the recent heavy rain and the tits fed vigourously on the reed stacks. I couldnt work out what they were finding but seemed to be tearing the reeds stalks open and feeding on something they found inside. (see photos)

Pools were busy with large numbers of Teal and Mallard.
Amongst them was a female Wigeon and male Pintail (see photo).

It was nice to see the Little Grebe back.

Also seen: Kestrel, Buzzards, Lapwing, Moorhen, Jackdaw, Blue Tit, Great Tit. Heron, Rook, Carrion Crow. Water Rail

No sign of the female Hen Harrier?!!

Other reports from Friday included: Raven, Cormorant and 3 Wigeon

A Water Rail called. The feeders outside the hide kept the Goldfinches, Greenfinches and Tits busy.
