SUNDAY. What a day!! 70mph winds across the midlands. The moors were pretty desparate and there were a fair number of trees damaged. A couple of Buzzards and a Heron were brave enough to fly but not for long.Chaffinch and Great Tit in the hedge bottom and the odd Redwing and Fieldfare keeping low and out of the wind.

The apple tree at the road side lost most of its apples.

I have cut some the cookers from the garden into chunks and put them in a bag in the freezer. This will be a good stock for the thrushes later on in the winter.

There was an entry in book for Barn Owl later in the day. But although this is frequently recorded I have yet to spot one!

MONDAY. Bright and clear and a very quiet morning considering yesterdays gales. Big flocks of Fieldfares and Redwings around. A large group washing in some standing water at a field margin. These were joined by a Great Tit and Goldfinches. The wetland pools were very quiet, a few Teal, Moorhen, Heron. A Mute Swan flew past in the distance.Small groups of Greenfinches, Chaffinchs about. Buzzards on the fence posts keeping a wary eye on events and a Sparrowhawk chased a Blackbird into the hedge. Five Lesser black backed Gulls passed high overhead and a small flock of Lapwings with a few Starlings thrown in, drifted over the hide.
