Sunday 6th July 2003 - Jon Lloyd & Steve France Warm day with some sun but overcast later on. Lots of small birds at Tibberton Grange and spent some time watching a pair of Spotted flycatchers hunting in the oak trees here. These trees have a number of dead branches which make an excellent take of point for flycatchers. Here also young Coal Tit, Chiffchaff. My predictions for waders at Wall Farm, on the wetland, seem to have come true. The water level continues to fall and the large areas of mud have pulled in increasing numbers of waders. Today, several Greenshanks out in the shallows and good views of one bird preening, Three Green Sandpipers and good views of Snipe. Steve spotted a small wader coming down onto the back pool which conveniently landed in view between the gap between the near and far pools and the dark bellied small wader was briefly located in scope and the first Dunlin this year put to book. Steve had seen a Sparrowhawk earlier. The Tawny Owl was in the Horse Chestnut on the Farm Drive. Also seen: Goldfinch, Chaffinch, Swallow, Swift, Reed Bunting, Chiffchaff, Sedge warbler, Whitethroat, Little Grebe, Moorhen, Mallard, Heron, Buzzard.
Pete Jordan reported a sighting later today of the Hobby being mobbed by Swallows between the hide and the farmyard.
