Friday 18th July

Hi Jon I visited Wall Farm last night, Pete Jordan was just leaving as I arrived at 18-30 he told me the water level was high on the marsh after the recent storms, but still attracting 2 Green Sandpipers a Greenshank and Yellow Wagtail.

Looking down the field from the farm entrance a Little Owl was showing well perched on the fence around the Beech tree. The march was very quite when I entered the hide only a few Black headed Gulls including the one juvenile and the juvenile Little Grebe that were raised on site this year. On the telegraph wires and flying around the march were a total of 25 Stock Doves. Shortly after Steve France arrived in the hide we located the Green Sandpiper and Greenshank feeding at the back of the marsh but showing well, the Greenshank entertaining us, darting around picking insects off the surface of the water. Tony Seagrave arrived in the hide and even more Green Sanpipers flew in the count going up to 5 Green Sandpipers and the one Greenshank all showing well at the same time. I stayed until dusk at 21-45 leaving Steve and Tony still in the hide. As I left the Tawney Owl was flying around the farm yard pursued by a mobbing Blackbird.
All for now Martin

DIARY for the Week Beginning Sunday - 13.7.03

Sunday 13th July 2003 - Jon Lloyd & Steve France

Martin Grant

I visited Wall Farm for a couple of hours middle afternoon as I was approaching Wall Cottages from the Kynnersley direction the Hobby came flying towards me at hedge height buzzing the Swallows that were perched on the telegraph wires. On entering the hide I opened the windows and a Kingfisher appeared hovered over the near pool in front of the hide then flew off to the east, a few minutes later I heard it fly back along the brook calling as it passed in front of the hide. On the marsh were 5 adult and 2 juvenile Black-headed Gulls along with 2 female Teal, 28 Lapwings, Green Sandpiper, a male Yellow Wagtail and 16 Stock Doves were dotted about in pairs + at least one immature. 2 Linnets were on the telegraph wires along with some of the Stock Doves and a Buzzard dropped into the back of the marsh putting up the Lapwings and Black-headed Gulls. On leaving the hide a Kestrel came soaring over the marsh from the direction of the farm and 2 adult and a juvenile Little Owl were in the usual field in front of the farm
