W E E K - B E G I N N I N G - 20.10.02

SUNDAY. Weather not good. Started raining at about 10.00 am and didn't stop much all day. Good for ducks!! Sixty plus Teal and plenty of Mallard about. A few Black Headed Gulls about and small flocks of Starling. Usual Kestrel and Buzzard and small flock of Lapwing.

MONDAY. One Widgeon turned up and still holding good flock of Teal. Kingfisher sighted.

TUESDAY. One Little Grebe still hanging about and Yellow Hammer, the first or a while.

WEDNESDAY. Ten Red Legged Partridge during the day and late afternoon 200 plus flock of Golden Plover. Also Comorant, Raven, Snipe and ten Lesser Black Backs flying overhead.

THURSDAY.

FRIDAY. Very blustery day with dark clouds and very heavey showers. A late visit turned up a flock of 20 Fieldfares in the last light. They were purposefully flying low and fast over the field behind the wetland and eventually coming to rest in a hedge. Watched Sparrowhawk fly across the pools. Witnessed an interesting technique that I have never seen before. The bird flew low and slightly stalled as it passed over the clumps of rushes almost directing its wings downwards and towards the rushes. Then on to the next clump and so on acrosss the wetland. I wondered if it used this technique to flush small birds out of the rushes or perhaps dragon flies!! Canadian Geese dropped on at dusk, 40 plus, large flock of Teal 80+. Great Spotted Woodpecker flew across the pool in front of the hide. Lots of Redwings in the hedges and Goldfinches feeding on the thistle heads on the field margins. Tawny Owl calling as we the left the hide. The two owls don't seem to be using the roost in the tree on the farm drive anymore. Not enough leaves for adequte cover?

SATURDAY. Great morning with bright blue skies. Lots of Thrushes, Fieldfares and Redwings, again this morning. Canadian Geese and 1 Mute Swan at dawn on wetland. Great view of a Kingfisher, this time stopping on a branch out on the wetland in full view. Sometimes you forget just how bright that blue is! The Sparrowhawk was about again along with two Buzzards and a Kestrel. They were all hunting in the Wetland area at some point, in first few hours of the day. One Buzzard very interested in the large number of Skylarks in the field behind the wetland. One or two Yellowhammers around this morning. I wonder if the numbers are building to make up the large winter flocks seen here. Fox in the long grass spent some time hunting mice/voles. Very entertaining jumping off all four paws. Two Skylarks chided him while he worked. I din't see him catch anything. Cormorant flew over head, and the usual small group of Black Headed Gulls were about..
