DIARY for the Week Beginning Sunday - 21.9.03

SUNDAY -

Wonderful early atmospheric morning with the sun eventually burning off the early mist. After the work party yesterday the track down to the hide is easy to walk. On the way down a pair of Meadow Pipits and a small flock of seven Skylarks flew overhead. Until recently we had no records of Meadow Pipits or Skylark in the book but gradually the numbers of building. I wonder if we will match the flocks of 400+ Skylark we had last winter

.
MEADOW PIPIT

Thepools were quiet with a solitary Greenshank venturing close to the hide and a few Teal and Moorhen were cuttling about. One or two Snipe dropped in during the morning.

A lone Swan dropped to preen to add yet more feathers to the copius plumes floating across the water and now dusting the pool margins and shore. Steve France tells me its worth dropping late to see just what comes in to over night on the wetland. During the week he recorded 110 Canadian Geese and good numbers of Teal and Mallard. The water is so populated you can hardly see the water.
